Abstract

Abstract: Taking a life-course and multi-level perspective this presentation will provide a deeper understanding of rural-dwelling older people's experience of exclusion from social resources which has, to date, been under-explored. Mixed methods were used: the qualitative phase comprised a case study approach using life history interviews and focus groups while the quantitative phase operationalised exclusion from social resources through secondary (exploratory latent profile) analysis of a British study (Hennessy et al, 2014). The qualitative analysis found exclusion from social relations to be a significant issue for participants over their life-course with the primary outcomes being a decline in social cohesion and participants' sense of belonging. These findings were supported by the quantitative data analysis which also revealed a link between certain social exclusion profiles and a decline in social cohesion but not sense of belonging. The findings will inform the development of realistic and appropriate policies to address the issues identified.
