Abstract

Abstract: Disability self-management are the strategies used by people with disabilities to maintain social participation despite loss of function. The purpose of this study was to explore how Mexican American women with severe functional limitations due to arthritic pain and deformity are able to self-manage their disabilities. After IRB approval and recruiting 17 Mexican American women with severe disabling arrthritis, narrative analytic techniques were used. Theoretical perspectives provided from Symbolic interactionism, Latino cultural citizenship, and a life course paradigm helped us to explore the data and create typologies based in third wave feminism. The sample included 17 women with a mean age of 63 (std=9.58); while the majority (70%)had a high school degree or lower, were unemployed (59%), recieving Medicare (59%) born in the U.S. (80%) and married (41%).Typologies included: Claiming conflict; Citizenship Spaces; Going In On Our Knees; and Should Not Have Stopped.
