- Abstract: This article draws on CFAS Wales data including 1, 869 people aged 65+, living in rural areas of Wales and sampled at random from primary care lists. We examine individual and situational risks for social loneliness and emotional loneliness. Regression models indicate that social loneliness is not influenced by marital status or individual cognitive or physical functioning, rural community type or area disadvantage but is the outcome of poor social support. Social support networks are constructed across the lifecourse, and are influenced by community embeddedness (population change, born in the region and Welsh speaking). On the other hand, individual risks (age, marital status, cognitive and physical functioning), rural community type and area disadvantage have an impact on emotional loneliness. Environmental press is amplified in two particular areas: area disadvantage moderates the impact of cognitive impairment on emotional loneliness and rural community type moderates the impact of functional impairment on emotional loneliness.
