- Abstract: Most studies examining racial/ethnic differences in dementia caregiving have relied on recruitment from convenience samples including clinics and support groups, or utilized data from intervention trials, and rely on special minority outreach efforts. Studies that compare caregivers and noncaregivers often recruit these noncaregivers from public announcements, churches, and community groups. Such convenience samples may not be representative of the general population and special minority outreach can heighten this lack of representativeness and complicate comparisons across racial/ethnic groups. Caregiving can increasingly be studied using representative, population based samples that sometimes oversample diverse caregivers. This presentation will review results comparing White and African American dementia caregivers and noncaregivers recruited from convenience and population based sources. Results from these population based studies generally show fewer racial/ethnic differences in caregiving than are found in convenience samples. Implications for policy and practice and challenges for future studies will be discussed.
