Abstract

Abstract: The probability of acquiring a disability increases with age. Prevalence rates for limitations in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) among adults > 65 years are approximately 15% and are approximately 26% in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). Evidence indicates reduced mammography participation among women with disabilities; yet there is a lack of evidence examining racial differences. We hypothesize that ADL and IADL limitations will contribute to reduced likelihood of participating in mammograms. Utilizing a secondary analysis of the Health and Retirement Study, we examined the relationships between ADL and IADL limitations among non-Hispanic White (NHW) and Black women > 65 years of age and mammography participation rates in 2012. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine predictors of mammography participation. When controlling for health status and health insurance, findings indicate that NHW and Black women who had not received a mammogram were less likely to report ADL limitations pertaining to eating or bathing/showing in 2012 (n=3063). Black women who had not received a mammogram were more likely to have difficulty with using the toilet. Further, NHW women who were less likely to have a mammogram were less likely to have difficulty making phone calls or managing money. Our hypothesis was partially supported in that obtaining mammograms may be less of a priority for Black women with ADL limitations. Practitioners should be aware of lower utilization among these groups and encourage women to obtain regular screenings.
