- Abstract: In friction stir welding, usage of tools with polygonal shaped pin results comparatively better post weld properties than usage of circular pin shape in stir zone. Lower tool life limits the usage of polygonal shaped pins. Enhanced thermal history in the stir zone during the process improves tool life as well as reduces weld defects. The strength of the joint depends on the microstructure evolution in the heat affected zone during welding. In order to control coarsening of grains in the heat affected zone temperature can be controlled through the increase of heat dissipation through its boundaries. In this paper, heat diffused through the boundary contacting backing plate is analysed in the view of identifying the suitable backing plate material on the usage of non-circular tool pins in the friction stir welding tool. Apart from this, investigation on the usage of different tool material was carried out in the view of understanding the effect of tool material.
