- Highlights: Nonlinear dynamics of an Euler–Bernoulli beam with a roller sliding on an inclined slope on the other side investigated for the first time. Approximate analytical solution obtained by the multiple time scale methods. Comparison between analytical and numerical results performed, confirming the reliability of both solutions. Coupling between axial and transversal displacement deeply investigated, both in linear and nonlinear regimes. Strong modifications of the coupling passing from small to large displacements highlighted. Free and forced dynamics are studied, and the backbone curve and frequency response curve are obtained by the multiple time scale method. These results allow us to detect analytically the main features of the nonlinear dynamics, in particular the hardening/softening dichotomy, and how it is influenced by the various beam parameters. Furthermore, the analytical results are compared with finite element simulations to check their reliability.
