- Abstract: The asymmetric interaction between various hypervelocity threats and inclined plates is an important issue in the armor design field. Most existing research does not consider the influence of asymmetry of the inclined target on the shaped charge (SC) jet reaming. In this work, the jet flow rate was analyzed by selecting an arbitrary section coincident with the jet axis to derive the formula of the final crater radius in all radical directions at any inclination angle. Experiments and numerical simulations with shell-less φ 56 mm SC were carried out to verify the theoretical model. Results show that the model is suitable for oblique penetration crater prediction under a small inclination angle ( ≤ 45°) of the thin target. The major and minor axial lengths of the final crater and the offset between the minor axis and the geometric center G of the initial crater increase with the increase in the inclination angle of the target. Highlights: A theoretical model of crater growth on the thin target was derived for oblique penetration. The obtained model is suitable for crater prediction under a small oblique angle ( ≤ 45°) of the thin target. The major and minor axis lengths of the final crater increase with the increase of oblique angle. With the increase in the oblique angle, the final crater minor axis moves along the downhill direction of the jet. The dependence between the resistance and the inclination of the thin target needs further research.
