Abstract

Highlights: The everyday-amnesia hypothesis of high-confidence misses does not satisfy Occam's Razor. Signal-detection theory accounts for the existence of high-confidence misses in recognition memory as mediated by bias. SDT predicts individual differences in the proportion of high-confidence misses, all as a function of criterion placement. According to SDT, the proportion of high-confidence misses is mostly independent of memory strength.
