- Abstract: The replaceable component concentrates plastic deformation to dissipate the energy released from the earthquake, protect the whole structure, and accelerate the recovery of the structure. This study tried to take the advantage of the replaceable component by installing the replaceable plates at the conventional exposed-type column base to consume a large quantity of energy. As a result, a new type of replaceable column base was designed, fabricated, and tested with a conventional column base under cyclic loading. The result indicated that the energy dissipation of this novel column base was significantly increased. In detail, this particular column base can consume nearly twice as much as the energy dissipated by a conventional column base at the drift angle of 0.03 rad. Meanwhile, the result showed the replaceable plates worked as the "fuse" since they were expected to fail with large plastic deformation and the column remained elastic. Finally, this study provided an analysis of the resistance mechanism of this novel column base considering the effect of the replaceable plates. Compared with the experimental results, the proposed equations can predict the yield and ultimate moment strength conservatively.
