- Abstract: Space industry has the never-ending demands in evolution of materials and urge on enhancing mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. In regard to weight, reliability and durability the studied materials are evolving, being inspected and monitored at microstructure datum. A dominant area would be strengthening mechanism, advancements in conventional fabrication techniques in materials like Aluminium, Titanium, Nickel and Polymers. Certain properties like susceptibility to corrosion, coefficient of thermal expansion in adverse temperature conditions are key note points to be analyzed for developing a progressive and viable alternative material for various space applications. In case of Aluminum based alloys, Al-Li (Aluminum-Lithium) is anticipated to have substantial impacts when replaced from conventional Al based alloys, they have optimized thermal and thermomechanical properties. Making Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics more cost effective, latest developments in 3D fiber reinforcements are happening. Self-healing matrices can be the newest domain for research in said field. In case of nickel-based alloys, their unique property of stability at elevated temperatures needs to be economically addressed and improvements can be done by controlling microstructure and innovating processing technologies.
