- Abstract:
- Abstract : Depressive comorbidities are frequent in obese subjects. While the underlying mechanisms remain to be determined, recent data suggest the involvement of inflammatory processes. Inflammation is a fundamental characteristic of obesity that can originate from the adipose tissue, changes in gut microbiota/permeability, and dietary habits. To further determine the role of obesity-related inflammation in depressive symptoms, we conducted a set of studies in patients with severe obesity and healthy subjects with obesogenic dietary habits. Neuropsychiatric assessments, including measures of depressive, anxiety, cognitive and neurovegetative symptoms, were performed in participants. Blood draws were collected for the measurement of inflammatory markers and immune-related processes. Results confirmed that obesity and obesogenic dietary habits are associated with systemic inflammation together with an increased neuropsychiatric vulnerability. Interestingly, inflammation-induced alterations in tryptophan metabolism correlated with depressive symptoms. These findings are consistent with the involvement of inflammatory processes in obesity-related depressive comorbidity and provide new insights on the underlying pathways.
