Abstract

Abstract: The experience economy is best known in the field of strategic marketing and consumer behavior and with the works of Pine and Gilmore. Here, by examining the article "Toward an urban design manifesto" written by Allan Jacobs and Donald Appleyard (1987), we intend to show that the fundamental exclusivities of experience economy, had been proposed and discussed in urban studies a decade before its introduction by Pine and Gilmore and there are significant commonalities between them. This brings up the idea that their article can be seen as a pioneer work, linking urban studies and quality of place with the experience economy. Therefore, although today we see a lack of studies on experience economy in urban fields, Jacobs and Appleyard offered it as an important goal for moving toward a better urban life and a quality environment. Highlights: Introducing the experience economy approach to urban researchers as an essential goal for cities, examining a pioneer study. Linking quality of place and the experience economy approach is important to understand the role of experiences in city life. Experiences are much more important than being just a new approach and should not be seen only because of new market demand.
