Abstract

Abstract : This article reports on the numbers of academic historians employed in History groupings within Australian and New Zealand universities, and examines the results by country, sector, appointment type, seniority and gender. It examines the current data in historical context, building on the findings of previous surveys to indicate trends in History staffing. It shows that staff numbers are stable, but in relative decline. It examines the staff numbers by gender and seniority and finds that while the gender gap has almost completely disappeared, it remains more pronounced at the senior end of the profession.
