- Highlights: A critical review of traditional and contemporary deicers is presented. Deicer-induced physical and chemical deterioration mechanisms in concrete are discussed. Experimental techniques for deicer-induced deterioration in concrete are discussed. Comparative analysis of existing deicers' effect on strength and durability of concrete. Future research directions are recommended for contemporary and alternative deicers. Abstract: Deicers ensure safe mobility across roadways in winter. Despite their advantages, deicers deteriorate concrete and are hence detrimental to concrete pavements and bridge decks. This article presents a state-of-the-art review of the concrete deterioration mechanisms that are instigated by conventional and contemporary deicers. Deicers-induced physical and chemical deterioration in concrete and their implications for compressive strength and scaling are critically discussed for various deicing exposure modes that include wet-dry cycles, freeze–thaw cycles, and continuous soaking. This review provides important short- and long-term consequences of the deicer's usage on concrete pavements. The critical findings from the contemporary literature and recommendations for future research needs are discussed.
