- Highlights: Poly(biphenyl pyridine) and SEBS are cross-linked for the preparation of AEMs. All AEMs have obvious microphase separation morphology. All cross-linked membranes have good mechanical properties and dimensional stability. Abstract: In this study, to solve the problems of insufficient ion conductivity and the excessive swelling ratio of poly(styrene- b -(ethylene- co -butylene)- b -styrene) (SEBS)-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs), poly(biphenyl pyridine) (PBPY) and SEBS grafted with N, N, N, Ν′, N′-pentamethyl-1-amino-6-ammonium iodide (PMAI) were cross-linked to prepare SEBS-PMAI-yPBPY ( y = 0%–20%) AEMs with a controllable cross-linking degree. All AEMs have a good micro-phase separation morphology, where the characteristic domain spacing is 20.94–29.92 nm. Uncross-linked SEBS-PMAI has high OH − conductivity (95.44 mS cm −1 at 80 °C). The conductivity value, water absorption and swelling ratio of cross-linked membranes decrease with the increase in the content of hydrophobic PBPY; however, the mechanical properties and alkaline stability are significantly improved. SEBS-PMAI-15%PBPY, which has high conductivity (75.62 mS cm −1 at 80 °C), low swelling (15.66% at 80 °C) and good mechanical properties, and the maximum power density could reach 226 mW cm −2 at 80 °C. The cross-linking of SEBS and PBPY was conducive to the improvement of the comprehensive performance.
