- Abstract: Rotating detonation engines having the advantages of high thermal efficiency theoretically, are being studied widely. Cheap solid fuels such as coals may decrease the cost. Experiments have proved the feasibility of gas-solid two-phase rotating detonation, but there is a lack of numerical simulations to fully show the flow field. In this study, numerical simulations of two-dimensional non-premixed coal-hydrogen-air rotating detonation engines were carried out to study the flow filed. Unsteady viscous two-phase model with volumetric reactions and kinetics/diffusion-limited rate model for the surface combustion were employed. Results show that the hydrogen-air reaction dominated the propagation of the rotating detonation wave. The instability occurred on the contact surface seriously when the hydrogen flow rate was 1.5 kg/s. As the particle diameter increased, the detonation velocity increased first and then kept almost constant. Graphical abstract: Image 1 Highlights: Two phase rotating detonation was simulated. Coal combustion did not provide energy for rotating detonation. Parallel particle streaks were formed.
