Abstract

Highlights: Chemokine profiles are different between adults and children. The chemokine CXCL10 is increased in virus-positive adults and children. The chemokine CCL3 and CCL4 are increased in symptomatic viral infections. Chemokines detected in nasopharyngeal swabs used for molecular diagnosis of infection predict viral presence with an accuracy of 79–84%.
