- Abstract: As the oil is leaked continuously and ignited during its production, transportation, storage, and use, a spill fire with a dynamically changing burning area is naturally formed, which is a complex phenomenon coupling oil spread and combustion. This paper reviews existing literature related to spill fires, categorizing the establishment and development of oil spreading models on liquid and solid substrates, the spill fire research concerning the effect of substrates, slopes, and boundary conditions, as well as empirical and semi-empirical models proposed by scholars. It is found that the spill fire research available in the literature mainly concentrates on experiments and rarely involves theoretical considerations. Moreover, there is still a lack of systematic models to characterize the characteristic parameters of the dynamic process of the spill fire. Based on the review above, the potential research emphases in the future are also suggested, seeking to have a better understanding of spill fires and provide more efficient countermeasures for the firefighting of such fires.
