- Abstract: The historical biogeography of the Lumbricidae, the main Palearctic earthworm family, may be linked to the paleogeography of their putative ancestral range in Iberia–southeastern France–Corsica–Sardinia. Although molecular phylogenetics has recently been used to analyze most endemic genera in this area, the genus Kritodrilus has not yet been studied. The generotype Kritodrilus calarensis and other closely related species inhabit southeastern France. However, other species from the Iberian Peninsula (e.g., Kr . osellai ) have been assigned to Kritodrilus, the same for the Vindobonic (Hungarian–Austrian–Czech–Slovakian) Dendrobaena mrazeki . In order to unravel the paleobiogeographic, evolutionary, and taxonomic significance of Kritodrilus, the aforementioned species (and three potential relatives) were sequenced for seven molecular markers. Molecular phylogenetic inference recovered a clade of French Kritodrilus (including Et . setusmontanus ) closely related to the Northwestern Iberian Galiciandrilus and Compostelandrilus, the latter being a sister clade to the Vindobonic species (described as a new genus). Time‐calibrated phylogenetic inference estimated that these three clades diverged around 55 Ma. Ecological niche models for these clades were mainly influenced by the same environmental variables, but showed non‐overlapping highly suitable areas (except for Kritodrilus ). Resumo: La historia biogeográfica de Lumbricidae, la principal familia paleártica de lombrices de tierra, puede estar relacionada con la paleogeografía de su área ancestral putativa en la Península Ibérica‐Sureste de Francia‐Córcega‐Cerdeña. Aunque la filogenia molecular ha sido utilizada recientemente para analizar la mayoría de géneros endémicos en dicho área, el género Kritodrilus aún no ha sido estudiado. El generotipo Kritodrilus calarensis y otras especies relacionadas estrechamente habitan el sureste de Francia. Sin embargo, otras especies de la Península Ibérica (p.ej. Kritodrilus osellai ) han sido asignadas al género Kritodrilus, como también lo ha sido la especie vindobónica (de Hungría‐Astria‐República Checa‐Eslovaquia) Dendrobaena mrazeki . Con el fin de desentrañar la importancia paleogeográfica, evolutiva y taxonómica de Kritodrilus, las especies mencionadas (y tres potenciales parientes) fueron secuenciadas para siete marcadores moleculares. La inferencia filogenética molecular recuperó un clado de Kritodrilus franceses (incluyendo a Et . setusmontanus ) estrechamente relacionado con Galiciandrilus y Compostelandrilus del Noroeste de la Península Ibérica, estos últimos relacionados a su vez con las especies vindobónicas (descritas como un nuevo género). La inferencia filogenética calibrada estimó que estos tres clados divergieron alrededor de hace 55 millones de años. Los modelos de nicho ecológico para estos clados fueron influenciados principalmente por las mismas variables ambientales, pero mostraron áreas de elevada idoneidad no solapantes (excepto Kritodrilus ). La reconstrucción de área ancestral infirió el origen de Lumbricidae en Córcega‐Cerdeña y la Península Ibérica, con una posterior expansión al este hacia Francia, Centroeuropa y el área Carpato‐balcánica. Para Kritodrilus y sus parientes, esta expansión podría haber sido contemporánea con el Máximo Térmico del Paleoceno‐Eoceno. Cambios climáticos posteriores podrían explicar sus áreas de distribución sorprendentemente disjuntas.
