- Abstract: The electronic structure of regular and irregular MgO (111) surface was studied using first‐principles. We conclude that the introduction of surface roughness can reduce the surface bandgap value down to 5.1 eV, i.e. below the critical value of 5.6 eV for xenon ions, thereby increasing the γ and efficacy values.
