- Abstract: A tapered fiber with a diameter of sub-micrometer to several micrometer show various optical characteristics. To guarantee its designed functions, it is necessary to measure the fiber diameter. This research presents in-process diameter measurement method using standing wave illumination, and the proposed technique is based on analyzing optically scattered light. This experiment verified that the scattered light angle could be measured accurately with an accuracy of about 0.2°, and the measurement accuracy was high. To evaluate the robustness to fiber misalignment of the measurement method, the diameter of a fiber was estimated when the fiber was displaced from the focal plane. When the displacement of the fiber from the focal plane was within a few μ m, it did not affect the diameter measurement.
