- Abstract: Solid "GaI" reacts with NaCp to give (η 5 ‐cyclopentadienyl)gallium (GaCp). Further reaction of a solution of GaCp with [Cr(CO)5 (coe)] (coe = cyclooctene) or Co2 (CO)8 leads to CpGa–Cr(CO)5 (1 ) or (thf)GaCp{Co(CO)4 }2 (4 ), respectively, which shows that GaCp can be used as a terminal ligand in coordination chemistry, but unlike its bulkier analogue GaCp* (Cp* = C5 Me5 ), it also acts as a reducing agent. Abstract : We present the first results of the use of GaCp (Cp = C5 H5 ) as a ligand in coordination chemistry, and we point out similarities and differences relative to its bulkier analogue GaCp* (Cp* = C5 Me5 ). GaCp can react as a carbene‐like substituent, and it can additionally undergo oxidative addition reactions with the formation of new metal–metal bonds.
