- Abstract : In a prospective, randomized study, 20 patients were observed in order to compare the effects of epidural and intravenous morphine. The analgesic response after epidural morphine was four times longer than after intravenous application. The analgesic quality was equivalent to the analgesia after epidural bupivacaine. Serum morphine levels showed no difference between the groups. Carbon dioxide response showed a slight decrease in the epidural as compared to the intravenous morphine group.
