- Abstract: The infinite slope stability problem receives much interest in geotechnical engineering, as it can provide an initial assessment on the mechanics of shallow landslides. It is well known that natural soils exhibit spatial variability, with properties varying from point to point, and a trend of strength changing with depth. This paper will use a random field method to investigate the reliability of undrained infinite slopes with linearly increasing mean strength. An algorithm generating 1D non-stationary random fields of undrained strength will be introduced. Infinite slopes subjected to both static and pseudo-seismic loadings are considered. The paper reviews the influence of non-stationarity of undrained strength on the reliability and failure mechanisms of infinite slopes.
