- Abstract: The Dou-gong joint is a key element in traditional Chinese timber structures. This work presents the mechanical properties of Dou-gong joints based on experimental investigations and numerical analyses. Six full-scale joints were tested under vertical monotonic loading and horizontal reversed cyclic loading. Typical features, including the failure modes, maximum load-carrying capacity, deterioration in stiffness and strength, and energy dissipation, are reported and compared. The results indicate that a Dou-gong joint has exceptional deformability and good energy dissipation capacity. The load-carrying capacity performs well under vertical loading, while it is poor under horizontal loading. The Bayesian model is constructed to predict the force-displacement curves based on the test data, in which the uncertainty of the model parameters is quantified from the posterior distribution. The posterior estimation of the parameters provides insight into the uncertainty assessment of the Dou-gong joint and provides useful information for reliability analysis.
