Abstract

Abstract: A new method, based upon transmission electron microscopy, was used to quantify the adhesion strength between diamond single crystal and the Fe-Co-Ni metal binder in the presence of a self-assembling WC coating at the interface. The lamella for mechanical test was cut out from the bulk metal-diamond composite and mounted on the Push-to-pull device. The main crack ran through grains of the Fe-Co-Ni metal binder rather than along the diamond–WC film or WC film–binder interfaces, which indicates the cohesive mechanism of the fracture. According to the results of in situ TEM tensile tests, the adhesion strength of the diamond–WC interface is higher than 207 MРa. Graphical Abstract: Image, graphical abstract
