- Abstract: Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) has progressed greatly in the past 20 years. The spatial resolution has been limited to a few tens of nanometers for a long time, but recently, TERS's potential goes far beyond the diffraction limit, even to the single molecule scale in an ultra-high vacuum and low temperature environment. However, in order for TERS to gain wider acceptance and applications in various fields such as biology and chemistry, improvements in both instrumentation and spatial resolution at ambient conditions are needed. In this review, we give an overview on the development of TERS based on a scanning tunneling microscope (STM-TERS) operating in a controlled ambient environment and the prospective directions for future research using our ∼1 nm spatial resolution STM-TERS system.
