- Abstract: Nonnoble metal electrocatalysts are in high demand to replace Pt-based catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in sustainable energy systems. It is a challenge to develop earth-abundant electrodes with high current density at a low potential. Here, we developed a novel strategy for synthesizing sulfur-doped copper phosphorus nanorods (Cu3 P∣S NR) for efficient HER catalysis in acidic water electrolyzers. Cu3 P∣S exhibits better activity than both Cu2 S and Cu3 P. The as-prepared electrocatalyst requires an overpotential of 223 mV to achieve a benchmark of 10 mA cm −2 and has a very large exchange current density and high turnover frequency (TOF) in acid media.
