- Abstract:
- Abstract : Rheumatic diseases occur preferentially in women, often during the childbearing years. Women's health may be affected by the underlying rheumatic disorder and vice versa, and this interaction is further complicated by the effects of used treatments. Important issues which often pose significant challenges to the patient and the treating physician include preservation of gonadal function and fertility, safety of contraceptive measures, in vitro fertilization and other assisted fertility measures, the management of rheumatic diseases during pregnancy and avoidance of pregnancy morbidity, and finally, management of menopause, assessment of cardiovascular morbidity, and cancer surveillance. Importantly, a multidisciplinary approach which involves rheumatologist/internists and gynecologist/obstetricians is important for proper counseling and optimal care of women with rheumatic diseases.
