Abstract

Abstract: Innovative value addition to agricultural products and their bi-products is being sought towards achieving prosperity in Africa. This review compiles the work conducted by various researchers over the last few decades on the use of cassava peels to produce activated carbon, while conditions for optimal production and salient economic considerations are discussed. In this review, the value chain of cassava peel AC has been elucidated starting from the cassava tuber, the source of the raw material, to the disposal of spent cassava peel activated carbon. It focuses more on the process quality, economic, and environmental aspects at each stage. The paper also presents a techno-economic analysis of a cassava peel based AC manufacturing plant of 1 t/day capacity with a 35% return on investment, net present value of $ 648, 331 over 16 years investment, and a pay-back period of approximately 2 years. The cassava peel supply chain strongly ties into the existent cassava supply chain. The production of activated carbon from cassava peels is techno-economically viable. Spent cassava peel activated carbon can be recovered and reused.
