- Abstract : Background: One of the cornerstones of postgraduate medical education is the ability to reflect on one's performance and identify areas for improvement (GMC, 2013). Research has shown that self assessment of performance by doctors in training can be a valuable educational tool (Jamshidi et al, 2009; Ward et al, 2003). The aim of this study was to compare the faculty and self assessment of the performance of ENT specialty registrars (StR) during a Paediatric airway simulation course. Methodology: During a one day paediatric airway simulation course, an intercollegiate surgical curriculum programme (ISCP) paediatric endoscopy procedure based assessment (PBA) was completed by both the StR and faculty member following completion of the Microlaryngobronchoscopy skills station. A Non-technical skills for surgeons (NOTSS) assessment was completed by the StR and faculty member following the StR leading a simulation managing a complex paediatric airway problem. Results: A comparison of self and faculty rating was undertaken using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (n = 17). A significant difference between self and faculty rating was observed for the PBA airway endoscopy (p = 0.034). No significant difference was observed for NOTSS (p = 1). Conclusion and recommendations: StRs self and faculty assessment differed for technical skills which highlights the importance of structured faculty feedback to enhance the development of StRs.
