- Abstract : Background/Context: It is a long-accepted truth that by their very nature 136 admissions can be challenging, complex and sometimes violent (Kelleher & Copeland, 1972). These challenges can be compounded by the difficulties of adapting to a new environment, particularly if the environment in question has not confirmed, through use, as fit for purpose. Aims: A two-day course was developed in concert with unit management using a combination of didactic teaching mini-sessions and twelve simulated scenarios. The scenarios were designed to enhance knowledge, confidence and clinical skills for staff, as well as developing team-working skills and exploring roles and systems relating to SLaM's new Place of Safety (PoS). Method: Participants (n=22, two courses) were nurses and support workers with varying degrees of experience who had successfully applied to work in the PoS. The twelve scenarios, each followed by a structured debrief using the diamond model, covered procedures regarding various challenging medical presentations, seclusion review, aggressive presentations, CAMHS admission, and issues with carers/multiple admissions. The first day was located in the Maudsley Simulation Centre and the second day was ' in-situ ', with the scenarios playing out in the various suites of the not-yet-functional unit. Results/Outcomes: Participants completed anonymous feedback forms, consisting of open questions. All participants agreed the programme was useful and relevant to them and stated that they would recommend the course to a colleague. Most respondents identified specific lessons learned and changes they could apply to their own practice. Several important practical issues regarding the safety of the environment were also identified. Conclusion: The outcomes, feedback and identification of environmental issues indicate the potential for simulation to be a useful and valuable learning tool for the purpose of team training and testing of clinical environments.
