Abstract

Abstract : Background: As the Hull Institute for Learning and Simulation (HILS) is approaching its 4th anniversary in June 2015, it is an ideal time for reflection on our experiences; the highs and the lows, providing valuable lessons for others setting up a Clinical Skills Facility. Methods: As a department it was our priority to build up a reputable facility for all health care professionals to use for their training requirements. We realised the need to assure our quality standards by obtaining the ISO9001 qualification with the intention of raising our profile and attracting users to our facility. Our quality standards have helped us along the way in building a strong team of dedicated individuals and attract clinical simulation fellows which have all contributed in enabling us to deliver our own in house developed courses, some of which have been rolled out regionally for Health Education England, Yorkshire and the Humber. The development has faced many challenges in the past but the HILS team have worked together to overcome these issues. Results: In 2011, through hard work and dedication the team were awarded with ISO 9001 Quality standard, which they still continue to hold and undergo regular audits. Footfall to end March 2015 has totalled 23190 individuals visiting the facility. Footfall is growing on a monthly basis as shown in the graph below, in 2015 January, February and March show higher comparison to previous years. HILS has seen 26 Simulation Fellows go through its programme, specialties including Medicine, Paediatrics, Anaesthetics, Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine which enabled the facility to have 13 in house developed courses running locally and regionally. Discussion/conclusion: Having a reputable facility with high quality standards which are continually reviewed and improved; assists in increasing the facilities profile, attracting visitors and courses ensuring success for the future.
