- Abstract : Background: The reliability of drop vertical jump (DVJ) and tuck jump assessment (TJA) in youth athletes is unclear. Assessment of adolescents entail special challenges since young athletes display great heterogeneity in performance of screening tests due to a variation in physical maturity, fitness and neuromuscular control. Objective: To investigate the intra- and interrater reliability of the subjective assessments of filmed DVJ and TJA in youth male and female football players. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Community level. Participants: 115 football players (66 boys, 49 girls) mean age 14±1 (range 13–16) years from 8 teams were tested. Assessments: Three trials of DVJ were filmed from the frontal view. The participants' ability to control their knees in the frontal plane during the landing phase was assessed using a 3-graded scoring scale: 0 good, 1 reduced, 2 poor control. TJA during 10 sec was filmed from the frontal and sagittal plane. Jump and landing technique was assessed according to ten criteria. Films were analysed by 3 sports medicine physiotherapists. Main outcome measurements: Intrarater reliability was calculated based on 2 assessments on each film at least 3 weeks apart by 2 of the raters. Interrater reliability was calculated based on assessments on each film by 3 independent raters. Results: For DVJ, intrarater reliability was moderate to almost perfect (kappa 0.50; 0.38–0.63 for rater 1 and 0.85; 0.78–0.92 for rater 2). For TJA total score intrarater reliability was ICC 0.59 (0.42–0.71) for rater 1 and 0.90 (0.86–0.93) for rater 2. Interrater reliability was ICC 0.51 (0.36–0.64) to 0.60 (0.42–0.73). Conclusions: The assessment of DVJ and TJA in youth athletes was rater dependent. This needs to be taken into consideration when using these tests to capture neuromuscular parameters associated with increased risk of injury or adaptions in movement patterns from injury prevention training. … (more)
