- Abstract: The effects of SiO2 and B2 O3 on the ionic structure of CaO–Al2 O3 binary slag under the MgO-and-spinel doubly saturated (MSDS) condition were evaluated by measuring the MgO solubility of the slag. The activity coefficient of AlO4 5− in the slag was deduced by evaluating the equilibrium constant of the ionic reaction. In addition, the proportion of each bridging oxygen (BO) linkage species and the enthalpy of solution with the 4-coordinate Al ion ( 4 Al) were derived by combining the Al avoidance model with the 11 B and 27 Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectra results. The enthalpies, activity coefficient of AlO4 5−, and enthalpy of the solution with 4 Al had good agreement in BO-dominant regions. From these results, the effects of the structural properties of slag on the stability of AlO4 5− and MgO solubility in the MgO-and-spinel doubly saturated slag were investigated in detail.
