Abstract

Abstract: This paper aims to assess the efficiency of Irish and North Atlantic Spanish ports in generating traffic and examine changes in efficiency over the period 2000-15. Specifically, technical efficiency scores are derived by using stochastic frontier analysis. Subsequently, cluster analysis is employed to develop a robust typology of ports for efficiency benchmarking. This paper has identified two clusters of ports with the estimated average technical efficiency of cluster 1 ports being much higher than the efficiency of cluster 2 ports. Differences in efficiency and main characteristics of clusters have persisted during the period 2000-15. Highlights: Labour, capital, cargo specialization and size drove economic performance of ports. Differences in performance of port clusters persisted from 2000 to 2015. The ports of Dublin and El Ferrol improved performance from 2000 to 07 to 2012–15.
