- Abstract: Aims: Exercise is a powerful strategy for health promotion and obesity prevention. Evidence suggests that adolescents initiating an exercise program may subsequently decrease their energy intake, particularly those with excess weight. This study aimed to assess how adolescents with normal weight (NW) and excess weight (EW) responded to an exercise program in terms of dietary parameters and eating behaviors and if there were differences based on weight status. Methods: Twenty-six adolescents (17 NW, 9 EW) engaged in an 8-week aerobic exercise program. Dietary parameters (energy and macronutrient intake, food quantity, diet quality and daily eating patterns) and eating behaviors were assessed pre- and post-intervention via 24-h dietary recalls and the three-factor eating questionnaire, respectively. Results: At baseline, adolescents with EW ate more frequently (p = 0.02), had greater portion sizes for their evening snack (p = 0.05), consumed a smaller proportion of their total energy intake before school (p = 0.05), and had less cognitive restraint (p = 0.008) than those with normal weight. Only those with EW decreased their total number of eating occurrences following the exercise program (p = 0.01). Conclusions: Weight status may influence dietary parameters and eating behaviors of adolescents with or without participation to an exercise program. More studies are needed to confirm these findings.
