Abstract

Highlights: Build a model for the remaining lifetime of pipeline induced by stray current. Propose a method to assess the effect of CP on the remaining lifetime of pipeline. Effect of rail-to-earth conductance on the remaining lifetime of pipeline. Abstract: External corrosion of natural gas pipelines is an important cause for failure, especially in urban areas where electrochemical corrosion induced by stray current commonly exists, which will lead to serious safety risk by the resulting accidents. An integrated model for the remaining lifetime assessment of corroded gas pipelines is proposed to evaluate the risk of pipeline failure conditional under stray current attack. In this work, impedance caused by electrochemical reactions is considered as well as uncertainties of model parameters are captured using a Monte Carlo simulation approach. The effect of potentiostatically applied cathodic protection on remaining lifetime is also discussed with different cathodic current. In spite of dynamic stray current absorbed by the pipeline, the results also shown that remaining lifetime of corroded gas pipeline remains relatively stable given a fixed set of corrosive environmental parameters.
