- Abstract: Anthropogenic activities are responsible for depletion of water resources worldwide therefore it's an utmost need to provide an efficient and effective treatment to wastewater before discharging into environment. In the present study, a hydroponic system has been designed for tertiary treatment of STP water where evergreen ornamental plant Nephthytis podophyllum ( N. podophyllum ) was screened and selected to use it in hydroponic system. The collected wastewater was given the consecutive treatment in three steps of 8 h each in hydroponic system. This system reduced Turbidity, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Hardness and Chloride of wastewater up to 88, 76, 64, 27 and 17% respectively with enhancing Dissolved Oxygen (DO) of wastewater up to 5.5 mg L -1 within 24 h. These results showed that hydroponic integrated system has potential to remove the contaminants from STP waste water at tertiary stage and can be utilized for recycling in toilets or for watering the plants for gardening.
