- Highlights: Preliminary specifications for particle size of cationic slow set (CSS) and cationic medium set (CMS) asphalt emulsions were developed. For CSS asphalt emulsion, we recommend a d10 of 2.4 μm and d50 of 4.4 μm. For CMS asphalt emulsion, we recommend a d10 of 3.2 μm and d50 of 6.9 μm. One asphalt binder base, one emulsifier for each setting speed, and bench-top recirculating mill, therefore, further validation is necessary. Abstract: There are many parameters that influence the properties of asphalt emulsion including emulsifier type, emulsifier dosage, soap solution pH, and milling time. These parameters influence viscosity, residue, storage stability, and particle size of the asphalt emulsion. Current specifications are over 80 years old, therefore, a movement toward more innovative specifications is desirable. This research examined cationic slow set (CSS) and cationic medium set (CMS) asphalt emulsion. Preliminary results for particle size recommends a d10 of 2.4 μm and d50 of 4.4 μm for CSS, and a d10 of 3.2 μm and d50 of 6.9 μm for CMS asphalt emulsion.
