- Abstract: Widely studied as a photocatalytic material for many environmental and clean energy applications, and as an electrode material for solar cells and rechargeable batteries, titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) has been recently demonstrated as a new microwave absorbing material after hydrogenation. Herein, we report that hydrogenated TiO2 nanoparticles have an efficient terahertz (THz) absorption in a wide THz frequency range between 0.6 and 2.5 THz. With competitive performances over other THz absorbing materials or structures, hydrogenated TiO2 nanomaterials have therefore displayed a bright future for broadband THz absorption and opened a new application for TiO2 nanomaterials. Graphical abstract: The efficient and broad THz absorption of hydrogenated TiO2 nanoparticles largely reduces the electromagnetic reflectance from a coated iron sheet. Highlights: First report on the impressive THz absorption of hydrogenated TiO2 nanoparticles. Hydrogenated TiO2 nanoparticles absorb efficiently in 0.6–2.5 THz. Hydrogenated TiO2 nanoparticles have largely reduced THz reflection and transmission. The absorption is related to the reduced refractive index and dielectric constants but increased electrical relaxation.
