- Abstract: In this study, we investigate the underlying mechanism by which chromatography can be used for the separation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on the basis of their diameter or length, with a view to optimizing this popular process. Using the knowledge gained through diffusion ordered spectroscopy nuclear magnetic resonance (DOSY NMR) analysis and chromatographic experiments, we demonstrate the feasibility of separating SWNTs on the basis of diameter and length simultaneously within the one chromatography column. These findings are of relevance not just to the understanding of SWNT separation processes, but also to the industrial use of size-separated SWNTs.
