Abstract

Abstract : Background: Ankylosing spondylitis disease activity score (ASDAS) is a new disease activity index with good metrological parameters. It includes the most relevant items of disease activity according to patient and doctors. Weighting of these parameters is the principal characteristic of the ASDAS when compared with Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI). Correlation of ASDAS with mobility limitation parameters in patients hasn't be investigated previously. Objectives: To investigate correlation between the ASDAS and the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI). Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in our department of Rheumatology that includes 56 patients (45 male/10 female) with ankylosing spondylitis according to the modified New York criteria. Clinical data used for calculation of ASDAS and BASMI were collected. ASDAS formula B was used (calculated with erythrocyte sedimentation rate) [1]. Results: Patients mean age were 38, 35±11 years [16-73]. The mean ASDAS was 4, 5±2, 3 [0, 5-10, 2]. The mean BASMI was 4, 2±2, 3 [0.5-10]. ASDAS was positively correlated to BASMI (r: 0.300, p: 0, 029) [fig 1]. Figure 1: Distribution of ASDAS and BASMI in patient with ankylosing spondylitis. Conclusions: ASDAS is a new activity index. It confirms that not only structural damage but also disease activity were responsible of mobility limitation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
