Abstract

Abstract : Purpose: To examine the accuracy of Hispanic parents' beliefs about their adolescents' use of condoms and oral contraceptives. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Setting: The UCLA/Les Kelley Family Health Center. Study Participants: Hispanic parents of adolescents (12-19 years old). Methods: A written survey assessed parental beliefs about the effectiveness, safety, and usability of condoms and oral contraceptives. Preliminary Results: Subject recruitment is currently in progress. To date, nine parents have participated in the survey. Sixty-seven percent of participants believe that condoms are very effective for STD prevention. Seventy-eight percent believe that condoms are very effective for pregnancy prevention when used consistently and correctly. Seventy-eight percent believe that oral contraceptive use prevents pregnancy all the time when used consistently and correctly, and 56% think that the pill is very safe to use. However, none of the parents believe that most teenagers are capable of using either condoms or oral contraceptives correctly. Plan: Enrol another clinic in the study protocol, Hubert Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center. This clinic is located in south Los Angeles and serves a patient population that is over 50% Hispanic. We plan to collect an additional 91 surveys over the next 3 months.
