- Abstract : The need to better understand and quantify the impact of comorbidity on patients and survival is well-recognised and forms an important area both for routine clinical practice and also for future research. However, there remain several challenges to overcome, a key one being the identification of optimal ways to accurately and consistently collect and measure comorbidity. To date, effective, simple and validated instruments to collect and aggregate comorbidity data are lacking. As a result, standard assessment and care for comorbidity varies considerably in rheumatology departments. Standardised ways for capturing data are therefore necessary for good quality research but more importantly for optimising patient care, quality of life, outcomes and prognosis. This talk reviews ways of collecting comorbidities in rheumatoid arthritis based on the existing literature, discussing general and disease-specific "indices" for quantifying comorbidity burden.
