- Abstract : Introduction: Overweight is highly prevalent among US Hispanic children, and it is commonly associated with metabolic risk factors predisposing to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease. However there are few data on Hispanic-Americans of non-Mexican origin. Objective: To examine the prevalence of components of the metabolic syndrome among Hispanic-American children presenting to a weight loss program. Methods: 42 overweight Latino children of predominantly El Salvadoran origin were screened for enrollment in a family-based weight loss program. Twenty subjects met the eligibility criteria and were enrolled in the program. Information regarding medical and family history of the subjects was obtained from parents. Subjects were admitted to the GCRC for baseline studies including anthropometric and body composition measurements, blood pressure assessments, oral glucose tolerance testing, and measurement of total- and HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides. Results: 50% of the enrolled subjects were males, and the mean age was 10.7 y (SD 2.0). The mean BMI z-score and percent body fat was +2.20 (SD 0.23) and 42.2 (SD 6.0) respectively. 70% of subjects had a positive family history of obesity and 50% had a positive family history of T2DM. 40% of the subjects were hyperinsulinemia (fasting insulin>15 uIU/mL), 70% had insulin resistance (HOMA-IR>2.0), 15% had impaired glucose tolerance, 15% had elevated TG (> 150 mg/dL), 80% had elevated FFA (> 0.6 mEq/L)Abstract : Introduction: Overweight is highly prevalent among US Hispanic children, and it is commonly associated with metabolic risk factors predisposing to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease. The presence of 1, 2, or 3 features of the metabolic syndrome was 25%, 50%, and 25% respectively. Conclusions: Overweight Latino children are at high risk for T2DM and other aspects of the metabolic syndrome. Effective obesity prevention and treatment programs targeted to reduction of the metabolic risk factors are urgently needed for this high-risk group. … (more)
