Abstract

Abstract : Background: Joint ultrasound is a sensitive means to detect joint inflammation particularly in recent RA. Ultrasound findings in elderly onset RA patients have not been previously compared with sonographic signs in young onset RA patients. Objectives: To compare sonographic scores of inflammation and erosion between patient with elderly onset and young onset patients with recent RA. Methods: Cross sectional study of 88 consecutives patients with recent rheumatoid arthritis (<24 months) diagnosed according to ACR 87 RA criterion. All patients were assessed by sonography of the wrists, metacarpo-phalangeal (MCP) and proximal inter-phalangeal joints (PIP) including semiquantitative scoring of synovial hypertrophy/effusion (SH/E), power Doppler (PD) signals and erosion. The ultrasound scores were calculated by the addition of corresponding ultrasound signs in both hands joints. Elderly onset RA was defined by a disease onset after the age of 60 years. Statistical analysis was performed by analysis of variance ANOVA. Significance was accepted for p<0.05. Results: Seventy two women and 16 men were included. Their mean age were 52.1±14 years [16-76]. Twenty four patients were diagnosed with elderly onset RA. Comparison of ultrasound scores were showed in table 1 . Only erosion score was significantly higher in elderly onset RA than young onset RA patients. Conclusions: This study shows that ultrasound detect more erosion in elderly onset recent RA compared with young onset RA but similar inflammation scores. Disclosure of Interest: None Declared
