- Abstract: Characterization of surface topography is very important for understanding and predicting the tribological behavior of engineering parts. Surface texturing has been found beneficial in modifying the tribological properties. However, there still lacks an effective method to describe the topographic features of textured surfaces. In this work, textured surfaces are modeled based on the Abbott curve. Roughness parameters are evaluated to effectively characterize the influences of texturing to functional properties. A parameter set of plateau root-mean-square height S pq, reformed surface bearing index S bi *, reformed core fluid retention index S ci * and reformed valley fluid retention index S vi * is suggested to be used for textured surfaces. S pq reflects the roughness of contact region, while S bi *, S ci * and S vi * give information of change of functional properties in peak, core and valley area, respectively. Using this parameter set, it is possible to reflect the roughness statues of surface before texturing and to quantify the effect of textures on the base surface in peak, core and valley area, and further, to predict their influence on the functional properties, such as contact, oil retention and debris catching capacity.
