- Highlights: This paper suggests a very simple and straight novel method to solve a difficult problem. It not only describes the power propagated through the dielectric slab as guided modes but also it elaborates the scattered power in the form of radiation modes. The characteristics of the sdielectric slab are evaluated by mode matching technique. Abstract: In this paper we have investigated the propagated and scattered fields of the thick dielectric slab which are represented in terms of guided and radiation modes respectively. These fields of the slab are matched with the normal incident E-polarized plane wave and diffracted fields by Mode Matching technique. The expressions for guided and radiation mode amplitudes are derived by applying the orthogonal property of the modes and are determined numerically. The mode amplitudes in each of these equations define the discrete functions of the guided modes field and angular spectrum for the radiation field. Further, the fields and the powers due to discrete guided modes are calculated. The integrals related to the radiated fields and powers are approximately evaluated by the method of steepest descents.
